Welcome

Hooray!

Welcome to slinkies.net, the domain name, chosen in haste by Agi, which now dominates his online destiny. Nobody can tell what treasures and secrets will lie within these pages, not even the creator, who is typing this long before most of the content of the site has been even concieved of, let alone published. No doubt he will forget to update this welcoming passage when the site eventually fills up.

Some Random Update!

Hi guess what. Once I bought this awesome digital camera, in order to work on my photomagraphicatating skills. At Christmas I was at my uncle'n'auntie's house in Bathurst, and took a load of snaps of their immaculate garden. Now YOU can take the tour.

Slinkies

"What is a slinky?" you ask? "Don't be stupid," I reply, everyone knows what a slinky is. Slinkies are the toys of infinite potential. Stretch 'em out, squash 'em up, swing 'em around ... slinkies can walk down stairs! But as the true slinky devotee knows, there's so much more to a slinky than meets the eye.

Update! - ASCII Art Slinkies

Many of you have been wondering how to do one of those amazing "ASCII Art" slinkies seen all over this site (I've had thousands of inquiries! Well, one.. actually, they didn't actually say anything but i'm sure they were about to ask).

Here's how you do it:

  • Open you favourite text editor, word processor, email client, or typewriter case.
  • Press Shift (either will do) and hold it down, with all your might.
  • It is vitally important not to let that darn shift button pop back up during this operation. If this were to happen it could result in disaster and complete mangulation of your ASCII Art Slinky.
  • When you're feeling ready, take a few deep breaths and proceed to the next step.
  • You might want to press both shifts if it makes you feel better. This may make the next step a little difficult, however.
  • Press the 9 key once. Do not press the one on the keypad on the right-hand side of your keyboard. This is the most common mistake make during the create of an ASCII Art Slinkies. I don't want to see any more tears. Be careful guys - Hit the 9 key just above the I and the O.
  • Repeat the last step until bored.
  • Press the 0 (ZERO) key. See next to last point on the caution that must be taken here.
  • Slowly remove your finger(s) from the Shift key(s).
  • Pat yourself on the back.

Another Update!

I bought a new slinky today. Its steel (or something). I haven't had a metal slinky for years. All the recent ones have been plastic. It's a whole new experience. This one came in a box printed with instructions. I have replicated these below for your information:

  1. To walk a Slinky down stairs.
Place Slinky on the top stair. Grip coil at top and slip it over toward the middle of the next lower step, releasing hold on Slinky. Now Slinky takes over and walks down stairs all by itself.

  2. To play with Slinky in hands
Hold End coils of Slinky with both hands. Now raise and lower each hand in a rhythmic motion.

  3. To walk Slinky down incline or slope
Any board or table top with a non-slip surface will do. Slope surface so rise equals about 1 foot every 4 foot length. Place Slinky at top, flip and watch Slinky start down, end over end.

  4. To bounce Slinky up and down
Hold a few coils tightly in one hand, allowing the rest of Slinky to hang down. Now in a bouncing motion, move hand slowly up and down.

I found no. 4 to be particularly informative.

Also printed on the box was a responsible warning. Take heed, children - for while a slinky can be your best friend, if you're not careful it can become a foe more dangerous than your could imagine:

CAUTION

Do not use in moving vehicle. Do not throw coils out any window. Keep Slinky away from face and eyes.

Remember, a Slinky is for life. Not for Christmas.
